Morning Pages: Why You Should Write Before You Scroll

I used to reach for my phone the moment I opened my eyes. Instagram, email, news. By the time I got out of bed, I was already overstimulated. Then I started writing morning pages, and everything changed.

What Are Morning Pages?

The concept comes from Julia Cameron’s The Artist’s Way. The rule is simple: write three pages, by hand, first thing in the morning. Do not edit. Do not censor. Just write. It is not a diary. It is a brain dump.

Why Handwriting Matters

Typing and handwriting engage different parts of the brain. Handwriting is slower, which forces you to process your thoughts more deeply. It is also easier to do first thing in the morning, before the caffeine has kicked in.

The No-Phone Morning

Morning pages only work if you do them before you check your phone. The goal is to clear your head before you fill it with other people’s thoughts. It is the difference between starting your day with your own voice and starting it with the internet’s voice.

Bottom line: Morning pages will not make you a better writer. They will make you a clearer thinker. And that is worth waking up 15 minutes earlier for.
